Secure, world-wide roaming wifi service.
eduroam is a free, secure, world-wide roaming wifi service available for REANNZ members. It provides researchers, staff and students from participating institutions with wifi across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop, or turning on their phone.
Today, 30 New Zealand institutions are using and providing eduroam with about 18,000 unique devices using eduroam in New Zealand each month. Check which institutions and organisations in New Zealand have eduroam. Check the coverage map for New Zealand.

eduroam was developed and is maintained by GÉANT (the pan-Europe research and education network) for the international research and education community. Today it is co-funded by Europe’s NRENs and the EU.
eduroam separates the concepts of authentication (identity providers, IdPs) and hotspots (service providers, SPs), allowing public, commercial or city wifi initiatives, in addition to research and education institutions.
Free service for users. There is no charge for eduroam use worldwide.
User authentication is done by the user’s home institution.
Authorisation decision, allowing access to the network, is done by the visited network.
Based on the most secure authentication and encryption standards in existence today.
Access to the eduroam service is one of the many benefits of becoming a REANNZ member, and is included in the cost of membership. All members have the option of offering eduroam to their students, researchers or staff to use at their home institution and any other participating institution in New Zealand and around the world. In order to give your users access to eduroam on your campus, you will need the following:
An Identity Management System (IdP), where your users' electronic identities are stored.
A RADIUS server, which needs to be connected to your IdPs.
Configure your wireless LAN according to the eduroam requirements
This tool simplifies and streamlines the enrolment of users into eduroam.
It builds customised installers for a range of popular PC and smartphone platforms and enhances the security for the end-user.
The tool ensures that users are protected against rogue wi-fi hotspots accessing usernames and passwords.
The tool builds a specific configuration for each participating organisation and so users should ensure they are downloading the correct installer.

This managed eduroam IdP as a service outsources the technical setup of eduroam IdP functions to the eduroam Operations Team.
It works for organisations with less than 200 users that may lack the technical or infrastructure capability to manage their own eduroam IdP.
This leaves the institution only having to focus on its users and frees up valuable technical support resource.
