News and Events 4K medical visualisation in Queenstown (again!) As part of eResearch NZ 2015, REANNZ, in partnership with CESNET, demonstrated a streaming 4K medical visualisation from Prague to Queenstown. Here at REANNZ, we provide the technology and the expertise to extend the capabilities of researchers, educators and practitioners using high speed networking and ultra-high resolution 4K video (Quad HD or UHDTV).As part of eResearch NZ 2015, REANNZ, in partnership with CESNET, the national e-infrastructure for science, research, development and education in Czech Republic, demonstrated a streaming 4K medical visualisation from Prague to Queenstown over the global eResearch and education network known as GLIF.In October 2014, these same GLIF partners came together to show a three-point telemedicine application between San Diego and Chicago in the US and Queenstown, as part of the annual GLIF workshop. Several months of planning, careful execution and expense went into this demonstration. The infrastructure that was carefully constructed for the October event was then strategically left in place, making future demonstrations possible. For last month’s event, we shipped our 8K (quad 4K) display wall to Queenstown, connected the 10Gbps network and requested a 4K video stream from a server at CESNET’s Prague data centre using the open source tool known as Ultragrid (software for low latency and high quality video network transmission). 4K videos of complex surgical procedures were shared with eResearch conference attendees over several days, demonstrating the repeatability, robustness and scalability of the technology. With the high-speed network in place, we demonstrated that live or recorded ultra-high resolution 4K video can be shared globally and on-demand. (Take THAT Netflix!)Mobile surgical services, medical education and other clinical and specialised medicine significantly benefit from this technology; and as the acquisition and display of 4K video streams becomes mainstream, this puts the technology within reach of a wide range of REANNZ members.
